Easy recycling and reusing hacks

10 ways to make recycling even easier

We all know it’s important to recycle, and research shows we’re getting better at it all the time. But if you’ve ever found yourself wondering what can be recycled and what can’t – or you just haven’t got the time to work it out – you’re not alone. With such busy lives, it can be easy to see recycling as just another thing to add to an ever-growing list of things to do.

Plastic bottles

The great news is recycling doesn’t need to be a hassle when you turn it into a habit. By making a few tiny changes to the things we do every day, it becomes second nature. Here are a few simple things to try that will make recycling even easier and get you recycling more without even thinking about it.

Tip 1: Bathroom bottles

Hang a bag on the bathroom or bedroom door to save having to walk to the kitchen to recycle things like empty shampoo or shower gel bottles.

Tip 2: Rinsing

When you’re washing up, get into the habit of rinsing your recycling using the dirty water at the end (which also saves on your water usage - smart!). The items don’t need to be sparkling clean – just a quick rinse will do!

Tip 3: Make your supermarket work for you

Off to the supermarket? Pack as much recycling in as you can while you’re there, so you can kill two birds with one stone. Keep boxes or tubs in your boot so you can pop things like glass, soft plastics, batteries - even water filter cartridges and ink cartridges in as you go along.

Tip 4: Bag your picnic

If you’re planning a picnic, take a reusable bag so you can take rubbish home for recycling. Sometimes there’s only a general rubbish bin when you’re out and about, so this can really cut down on litter. And if you bring along an old takeaway food container, you can bring any leftovers home with you - for eating or for popping in the food waste bin.

Tip 5: Get everyone involved

Get your kids/partner/housemates on board so you don't have to do all the recycling yourself!

Top tip for families

With smaller children you could make it into a game of ‘who can get the most items in the right piles - recycling and non-recycling’ with some sort of prize / bribe. (Everyone loves a prize, so housemates and older family members might enjoy this too…)

Tip 6: Do less work

Give yourself less work! The best way to make recycling easier is obviously to use less in the first place, by finding ways to reduce and reuse more. Glass jars with lids can be washed out and are really handy for storing things like soup or sauces.

Tip 7: Lunching at work

If you’re taking lunch to work, pack it in reusable food containers, and bring a reusable water bottle out with you to save buying a drink.

Tip 8: No plastic bags

Say no to plastic bags. Pop a reusable tote bag or bag for life in your coat pocket or bag so next time you go to the shops you’ve got one with you to use.

Tip 9: Keep your veggies loose

Cut back on food packaging: choose loose fruit and vegetables at the shop instead of buying the ones in packs.

Tip 10: Only buy what you need

Meal planning (and only buying the ingredients you need) is a super smart way to save on food waste - and money too. If you’re after some meal planning inspiration, there are some healthy recipe ideas and free plans to print and use.
