Gypsy and Traveller liaison

How we liaise with the Gypsy and Traveller community

There is a range of advice and support available to Travellers that’s delivered by us as well as other organisations.

We liaise with and support the Gypsy and Traveller families within Central Bedfordshire.

We advise and support the Gypsy and Traveller families accessing our services and those of our partners.

We aspire to build strong and positive relationships between the Gypsy and Traveller community and settled community, which will promote awareness and respect for each other.

We work closely with the Gypsy and Traveller community in Central Bedfordshire, and through a variety of community-based initiatives and partnerships, they help celebrate culture, improve access to services, and build trust. Some examples of our work include:

  • collaborating with Gypsy and Traveller families in Central Bedfordshire to collate a collection of traditional recipes to celebrate their history and culture; read the cookbook (Word)
  • partnering with Full House Theatre to deliver workshops within the community to enable the children to access arts, crafts and music
  • organising on-site oral health promotion events, providing advice on dental care and support to access NHS dental services for children
  • working with the Health Inclusion Health Visiting Team to offer face-to-face support with pre- and postnatal care
  • working with partners including Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue service to arrange fire safety events at Gypsy and Traveller sites
  • visiting sites with the Immunisation Team to raise awareness about vaccinations and provide support to access vaccinations
  • organising events for children including Halloween arts and crafts, a session where children could create their own fairy garden, celebrations around the Jubilee in 2022 including colouring competitions and sessions to make bunting, and colouring competitions at Christmas and Easter
