The Trading Standards team would like to warn residents of a telephone scam which has been reported to us recently.

Don’t fall for them

We've had several reports from concerned residents, particularly in the Biggleswade area, who have received a call, whereby the caller claims to be from “Council” and is calling about a recent accident you may have had.

These telephone calls have all the hallmarks of a scam and we would advise anyone who receives such a call to act with caution.

Our advice to residents would be:

  • never get tricked into providing your personal or bank account details to anybody over the telephone unless you are absolutely certain of their intentions
  • don’t be fooled into thinking they may already have your details and are just looking to confirm them
  • never be intimidated into making a quick decision, for example, because the opportunity is only available for a short period

Finally, if you are ever unsure as to whether a call is genuine, do not be afraid to end the call and check the caller is who they say by calling the organisation they claim to represent. A genuine caller will not mind you doing this, a scam caller will try to convince you otherwise!

Please help prevent others from falling victim to this type of scam, by letting your family and friends know about this alert.
