We, the undersigned residents of Bedfordshire and concerned members of the wider community, respectfully call upon Central Bedfordshire Council and the Department for Education to support the creation of a grammar school within our county.
At present, Bedfordshire is one of the few counties in England with no dedicated grammar school provision, leaving academically gifted pupils with limited local options for selective education. Many families are forced to seek places in neighbouring counties — such as Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, or Lincolnshire — which often leads to long commutes, disrupted family life, and financial strain.
This situation not only disadvantages Bedfordshire’s children but also contributes to an educational imbalance across the region.
Why Bedfordshire needs a grammar school
Promote social mobility
A grammar school would provide high-achieving pupils from all backgrounds, including those from disadvantaged communities, with access to a free, high-quality academic education — one that nurtures potential, raises aspirations, and unlocks opportunity.
Enhance local choice
The current absence of a selective education option limits parental choice. Introducing a grammar school would diversify the county’s educational offering, enabling families to choose a school that aligns with their child’s needs and aspirations.
Retain talent within the county
Each year, some of our brightest young minds leave Bedfordshire to pursue academic excellence elsewhere. A local grammar school would retain this talent, strengthening the county’s intellectual, social, and economic fabric.
Relieve pressure on surrounding counties
Nearby grammar schools in other counties face overwhelming demand from out-of-county applicants, placing stress on their resources and creating fierce competition. A Bedfordshire grammar school would alleviate this pressure by providing a local alternative.
Boost community and economic growth
Excellent schools attract families, raise property values, and support local development. A grammar school in Bedfordshire would contribute to long-term community prosperity and pride.
Equality of access
Independent academic schools are financially out of reach for many. A state-funded grammar school provides a merit-based pathway for success, irrespective of a child’s financial background.
Supporting details
We therefore urge Central Bedfordshire Council and the Department for Education to:
- commission a feasibility study into the establishment of a grammar school in Bedfordshire
- identify appropriate locations, funding opportunities, and governance structures
- engage in full consultation with residents, educators, and key stakeholders
- consider the long-term benefits for generations of Bedfordshire students
The introduction of a grammar school is not about creating division — it is about providing opportunity. It is about ensuring that all children, regardless of postcode or income, have the chance to thrive and fulfil their academic potential.
Let us work together to build a fairer, more ambitious, and more aspirational future for the young people of Bedfordshire.
