Reduce the speed limit along the A507 through Ampthill, to 40 mph from the approach to the Station Road roundabout southwards to the start of the 30mph limit approaching Doolittle Mill. The A507 bypass originally skirted fields around Ampthill but now passes between established housing estates and the Station Road industrial estate. The existing 50mph limit is no longer appropriate to the characteristics or usage of the road, with estate junctions, pedestrian crossings, use by vehicles for local journeys and use by cyclists. Trees which previously shielded houses from views of the road and traffic noise have been removed. There are no other roads in Central Bedfordshire with similar characteristics which have a 50mph limit. Visible yellow backed 40mph speed limit signage and roundels should be installed to slow vehicles on approach to the Station Road roundabout, which has an entry from a housing and industrial estate and an adjacent footway which is part of a journey to school. The proposed extent of the 40mph limit is shown on the map (as provided).
Supporting details
The 40mph limit will ensure drivers are aware that they have entered an urban area and will support residents’ active travel choices within the town and into neighbouring communities.
