A to Z of recycling - Textiles

Description

Clothes and textiles that are still in good condition can be reused. Good quality textiles can be donated to charity shops, passed on for free through sites such as Freegle, or sold through online selling sites.

Alternatively, good quality clothing and textiles can be recycled through our separate kerbside collection scheme. Please do not put textiles in your black household waste or dry recycling bins.

To recycle your unwanted but reusable textiles and shoes:

  • put the clean, dry, and reusable textiles in an unwanted, standard-size, carrier bag (no black bin bags, please)
  • place the bag next to either your recycling or black waste bin by 7 am on your collection day

Important: please do not put the bagged items in your recycling bin, as they won't be emptied.
Worn-out textiles in a poor condition cannot be recycled through this scheme.

Alternatively, you can take any unwanted textiles and shoes to a local textile bank. Some textile banks will accept worn-out textiles in a poor condition for recycling as there is an end use for them in 'flocking'. Check what your local textile bank accepts before disposing of worn-out textiles.
