Planning glossary - Permitted Development Rights

Planning term

Rights to make certain changes to a building without the need to apply for planning permission. They derive from a general planning permission granted by Parliament, rather than from permission granted by the local planning authority (LPA).

Permitted development rights are set out in the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015, as amended. Permitted development rights for householders: technical guidance has been issued by the government.
