Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) helps reduce crime, nuisance and anti-social behaviour, and assists in securing arrests and prosecutions.

Cameras are located in:

  • town centres
  • car parks
  • a number of smaller retail areas

We record images from control rooms in Thorn Turn (Houghton Regis) and Stevenage. Cameras record 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Images are retained for 21 days at Thorn Turn and 28 days at Stevenage.

We also operate a number of re-deployable cameras which are placed in hot spot areas where static CCTV does not exist. We always consult local residents prior to deployment of a mobile camera.

There are 90 cameras monitored from Thorn Turn in the following areas:

  • Dunstable
  • Leighton Buzzard
  • Houghton Regis
  • Caddington

There are 15 cameras monitored from Stevenage in the following areas:

  • Biggleswade
  • Sandy
  • Shefford

Retail Radio link

Radio link gives shops and pubs radio links. A member of staff carries the radio and can share messages with other users about suspicious activity in their area. When an incident occurs users can pass on information, request the CCTV control room monitor a situation, or request further assistance.

The radio link operates in both CCTV control rooms, and covers:

  • Dunstable
  • Leighton Buzzard
  • Houghton Regis
  • Biggleswade
  • Sandy

CCTV Code of Practice

CCTV surveillance is regulated by:

  • The Data Protection Act 2018
  • Human Rights Act
  • Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act
  • Freedom of Information Act
  • CCTV Code of Practice

We will only use CCTV to achieve the aims and objectives as set out in the Code of Practice. 

We position CCTV cameras to respect the privacy of the public and residential properties. They will not overlook areas where privacy is expected without authority.

We display signs where cameras are in operation. We hold data in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

The CCTV Control Rooms are a restricted area and there is no right of access to the public.
