If you are a resident of Central Bedfordshire and using a van, pick-up, large trailer or car towing a single axle trailer (from 1.2m x 0.9m up to 1.8m x 1.2m), you will need a waste permit to dispose of the following:
- recyclable waste
- general waste
- DIY waste (up to 6 items per month, examples below)
Waste permits are free. To apply, either telephone 0300 300 8080 or apply online (link opens in new window). Please allow 2 - 3 days for the permit to arrive.
A permit is also required if you are using a car, including MPVs and 4x4s, plus hobby trailer up to 1.2m x 0.9m and have more than 3 items of DIY waste per month. Remember to bring your permit with you when visiting the site.
Why do I need a permit?
The permit system:
- prevents tax payers footing the bill for commercial waste clean-ups
- is the nationally recognised method of ensuring only household waste is deposited at our sites
- keeps tidy tips open - permits are issued by the Environment Agency which regularly monitors waste being taken to the sites. If it is found that commercial waste is being disposed of at our tidy tips, it is possible that the licence would be revoked and the site closed
The permit system limits both the type of materials and the number of times vehicles such as vans and pick-up trucks, which are more likely to contain commercial waste, can visit a site.
However, it still allows residents the convenience of using vans or large trailers for their household waste.
Examples of DIY waste
Maximum 6 items:
- 1 bath tub
- 1 toilet pan
- 1 cistern
- 1 wash basin
- 1 water tank
- 1 standard door
- 1 kitchen worktop (maximum length 1.5 metres)
- 1 kitchen unit
- laminate flooring (x 10 boards, maximum length per board 1.2 metres)
- chipboard / plasterboard (maximum size by board 8' x 4')
- 1 window frame
- 1 tree stump (maximum 100mm diameter)
- 1 fence panel and post
- 1 sack (100 litres) of soil or rubble
- 2 sacks (100 litres of other DIY waste, e.g. tiles)
Fridges, freezers and tyres
A permit is required for these.
For fridges and freezers – this is restricted to one of each within a 12 month period.
For tyres - restricted to two tyres within a 12 month period.
Ideally all tyres should be disposed of by the garage / service centre when the tyre is changed.
