Footways/footpaths and salt bins
We do not grit footways or footpaths.
We provide salt bins to town and parish councils where they are requested and where highway safety criteria are met. These criteria are based on highway risk, such as bends or steep hills, where there is a higher risk of slipping in icy conditions.
We recognise that there can be strong community demand for salting in icy or snowy weather, especially when our highways teams are focusing on keeping the busiest roads safe.
Town and parish councils can choose to provide and maintain additional salt bins in locations where we would not normally provide them on highway safety grounds. In these cases, the town or parish council is responsible for refilling the bins. We may be able to supply salt through our contractors, depending on availability.
Salt bins are not provided for use on private property.
Requests should initially be made via FixMyStreet.
