Home composting

What is home composting?

Home composting is an easy and eco-friendly way to manage organic waste and improve your garden's soil health. It involves the natural decomposition of organic materials, including garden waste and select food items like uncooked vegetables and fruit, into nutrient-rich soil. Soils you can use in your garden. The decomposition process is facilitated by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi.

Getting started

To start composting at home, choose a method such as bin composting, pile composting, or vermicomposting. Select a suitable location in your garden/property, gather a mix of carbon-rich (browns) and nitrogen-rich (greens) materials, and begin layering them in your compost bin or pile. Keep the compost moist and aerated by turning it regularly.

Benefits of home composting

Benefits of home composting include reducing landfill waste, creating nutrient-rich soil that improves water retention in your garden, and minimising the need for chemical fertilisers. By managing waste at home, you also help lower vehicles emissions as your waste doesn’t require pick up and transport. Additionally, the soil you create fosters plant growth creating vibrant habitats and ecosystems for local wildlife.
