Rationale for change – school admission arrangements for 2028 to 2029

Consultation closes: Monday 30 November 2026
Consultation opened: Monday 19 October 2026

The Houghton Regis area has experienced significant growth, particularly through the Bidwell and Linmere housing developments. Existing catchment boundaries were originally drawn many years ago and, in some cases, no longer reflect where families live in relation to their nearest school.

In some circumstances, families may live very close to a school but fall outside the catchment area boundary, placing them at a disadvantage compared with families living further away but within the catchment area.

The proposed change would make the admissions process fairer by giving priority to children who live closest to the school, rather than using a fixed catchment boundary. We believe this would make the process clearer and easier for families to understand.

The headteachers and governing bodies of all 3 schools have been consulted and support the proposal and the consultation.

How the changes affect you

These changes do not affect children already attending the schools. If you plan to apply for a reception place in September 2028 at any of the schools affected by the proposals, the changes could affect how places are allocated should the school receive more applications than places available.
