Before a child travels overseas to perform or work
If a child who normally lives in Great Britain is due to travel overseas to:
- perform on stage
- appear in a film, television programme or commercial
- work as a model
- take part in a sporting event for payment
- take part in another activity where payment is involved
they may need permission from a Magistrates' Court before they travel.
We cannot issue permission for a child to perform or work overseas. This permission must be granted by a Magistrates' Court.
Who must apply?
The application must be made by a parent, legal guardian, or someone acting with their consent.
Parents should not assume that permission for a UK performance allows a child to perform overseas.
What parents must do
Parents or legal guardians must:
- make sure the necessary court permission is obtained before travel
- provide consent for the child to take part
- make sure the child's welfare, health and education are considered
- provide information requested by the court
- attend court if required
- make sure appropriate supervision arrangements are in place throughout the trip
What employers, agents and production companies must do
Anyone arranging the overseas activity should provide information to support the application, including:
- details of the performance, production or event
- dates of travel and return
- the country and venue where the activity will take place
- accommodation details
- travel arrangements
- supervision arrangements
- contract or engagement details where applicable
Providing complete information as early as possible can help avoid delays.
Supervision arrangements
The court will need to be satisfied that suitable arrangements are in place to safeguard the child while they are overseas.
If a parent is not travelling with the child, details of the person responsible for the child must be provided. A licensed chaperone may be required.
Information that may be required by the court
The Magistrates' Court may request:
- the child's birth certificate
- written parental consent
- school approval if the child will miss school
- details of the performance, activity or employment
- a contract of engagement
- travel and accommodation details
- medical information or confirmation that the child is fit to travel
- information about supervision arrangements and chaperones, where applicable

Applications should be made to the Magistrates' Court covering the area where the child lives.

Parents and organisers should begin the process as early as possible to allow time for:
- gathering supporting documents
- any required checks
- arranging a court hearing
- receiving the court's decision before travel takes place
Important
A child must not travel overseas to take part in a performance, modelling assignment, sporting activity or other paid activity until the necessary permission has been granted by the Magistrates' Court.
