Highways plan to improve roads and enhance safety

Thursday, 2 April 2026

We have published out Capital Works Plan enhance road safety and infrastructure, including essential highway improvements, repairs, and upgrades.

The data-driven approach ensures that decisions are based on real-time assessments of road conditions, traffic patterns, and community needs. This approach allows us to allocate resources efficiently and swiftly respond to changes in demand or unexpected circumstances.

The 2026-2027 Capital Works Plan will focus on several important areas of infrastructure improvement, including:

  • carriageway and footway resurfacing: renewal of surfaces to address deterioration and improve performance, ensuring road surfaces can support current traffic loads and meet safety standards
  • flooding and drainage: upgrading drainage systems to ensure roads remain functional, especially during adverse weather
  • street lighting: enhancing visibility and safety through improved lighting
  • bridges and structures: conducting inspections and necessary enhancements to critical infrastructure
  • road safety: improving road layout, markings and signage, as well as increasing education initiatives
  • active travel and rights of way: improving and expanding walking and cycling routes to encourage sustainable and healthier travel options

Councillor John Baker, Executive Member for Finance and Highways, said:

We are pleased to have developed our Capital Plan for 2026/27 that reflects both our long-term vision and our commitment to data-driven decision-making. We will continue to manage reactive repairs using reports received through Fix My Street and officer inspections, addressing urgent repairs and smaller works as needed throughout the year.
