Local Plan timetable updated in line with new government guidance

Thursday, 26 March 2026

We've published an updated timetable for preparing our Local Plan, alongside a formal Notice of Commencement, in line with new government regulations.

The update follows the publication of new regulations, which came into force on 25 March and requires all local authorities to adjust how Local Plans are prepared.

The Local Plan is the document that sets out how Central Bedfordshire should grow in the years ahead. It helps decide where new homes, jobs and infrastructure are needed, while also protecting the character of existing communities and the countryside. Having an up-to-date plan in place helps ensure future development is properly managed and supported by the right services and facilities.

We've carefully reviewed our existing timetable to ensure it complies with the new requirements. While the overall programme remains in place, some stages have been updated to reflect additional steps now required by government.

Importantly, this does not mean the Local Plan process is starting again. Work on the plan is already well underway, and significant progress has been made, including the development of a strong evidence base.

Despite these adjustments, we remain on track to adopt the Local Plan by December 2028.

We've also published our Notice of Commencement, which is formal notice of intention to commence plan-making, as required by the regulations.

Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, Adam Zerny said:

The Government has changed the legislation governing how Local Plans must be prepared, and the Council has updated its timetable accordingly. Good progress is being made on the Local Plan and we look forward to seeing it adopted for Central Bedfordshire. For residents, this means having a clear and up-to-date plan that helps make sure future growth is properly managed and supported by the homes, infrastructure and services our communities need.
