Mockingbird pilot to strengthen foster care community and support
Tuesday, 26 November 2024
We're excited to launch Mockingbird, an innovative model aimed at strengthening support for foster carers and creating a secure, nurturing environment for children in care.
Launching this November, this two-year pilot will create ‘constellations’ – small, closely-connected groups of foster carers who will benefit from peer guidance, social activities, and arrangements like sleepovers to support each other.
The Mockingbird model, managed by The Fostering Network, is based on the principle that “it takes a village to raise a child.” This evidence-based approach reflects the kind of support and security often found in an extended family, helping foster carers feel connected and supported. By fostering stronger relationships, this model aims to create greater stability for children in care.
The success of foster care relies on the dedication of carers who provide children with stable, nurturing homes. We deeply values their contributions and understands that informal support networks already play a crucial role in connecting carers. The Mockingbird model complements this support providing formalised connections and strengthening relationships within the fostering community.
Councilor Steve Owen, our Executive Member for Children’s Services, said:
We are committed to providing stability and security for vulnerable children. By piloting Mockingbird, we are investing in our incredible network of foster carers, continuing to deliver a safe, reliable, and supportive environment for children in care to thrive.
This launch is part of our partnership with 11 other local authorities across the East of England under the Foster East initiative, which is supported by a regional communication campaign.
Through this innovative approach, we aim to improve foster carer recruitment and retention, ensuring a lasting difference for children and families.
