A coordinated enforcement operation targeting used car sales businesses in Leighton Buzzard has been successfully carried out by our Trading Standards service, in partnership with Bedfordshire Police, the Bedfordshire Road Safety Partnership and specialist vehicle examiners.
Operation Ignition, which took place on Wednesday 1 July 2026, saw officers conduct an unannounced inspections at the Collec Depot on Billington Road, an established cluster site home to 17 separate car sales businesses.
The operation was launched in response to a significant and disproportionate volume of complaints received, with concerns raised about vehicle safety, misleading sales practices and poor aftercare.
Across the site, complaints commonly related to mechanical failures shortly after purchase, aggressive or misleading sales tactics and inadequate or non-existent aftersales support.
During the operation, officers entered multiple sales offices and carried out detailed compliance checks under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and wider consumer protection legislation.
At least one vehicle from each inspected business was examined for:
- roadworthiness and safety, including brakes, tyres, steering and structural condition
- dashboard warning indicators and potential electronic faults
- consistency between advertised details and actual vehicle condition
- evidence of appropriate pre-sale checks and repair records
Officers also reviewed business processes, documentation and workshop practices to identify potential breaches of consumer law. Where concerns were identified, evidence was gathered for further investigation and potential enforcement action. In some cases, vehicles may be subject to voluntary withdrawal from sale pending remedial work.
The operation forms part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Safer Car Strategy, aimed at ensuring vehicles sold to the public meet minimum safety and legal standards.

The operation demonstrated our commitment to protecting residents from unsafe vehicles and unfair trading practices. The volume and consistency of complaints linked to this location made it a clear priority for intervention. We will not hesitate to take further action where businesses fail to meet their legal obligations or put consumers at risk.
We will now review evidence gathered during the operation and take appropriate enforcement action where necessary, which may include formal warnings, prosecutions, or further compliance activity.
