About our new secondary school for Houghton Regis
Sponsor decided for new school
We now have a sponsor for the new school in Houghton Regis.
Houghton Regis Academy is closing
The Secretary of State for Education, in mutual agreement with Greenwood Academies Trust (GAT), has approved the closure of Houghton Regis Academy from 2022. A new secondary school is now needed to meet the need for secondary school places in the area, including the longer-term need as a result of housing growth in Houghton Regis.
So we're building a new school
We have agreed to forward fund the new school so it can be built for September 2022. The school will be built as a 1,120 secondary with a sixth form, and will be increased to 1,850 places, to meet the need from housing development as this is built.
The school will meet the need for secondary school places for the local community and will be run by a new academy.
About the site for the school
The school will be located on the Kingsland Campus, which was originally built as a secondary school site with associated playing fields and community leisure facilities. The Kingsland Campus is a mixed-use site, and its primary purpose remains education and leisure.
There will be:
- a main teaching block
- separate sports block
- an all-weather pitch
- standard pitches for outdoor sport and a new car park
- vehicle access from Parkside Drive
- additional pedestrian access from the west, through the Kingsland Campus and from the north, connecting to the new houses which are planned as part of the Linmere housing development site (visit the Linmere website to find out more about the development)
Running the new school
The Department for Education requires us to secure a new provider for the school under its free school presumption process. This process is underway.
Our Executive Committee agreed to commission the new school at its meeting on 8 October 2019. View or download the committee report (PDF).
