Houghton Regis Academy

Admissions information for current Year 9 and Year 10 pupils

Following the Secretary of State for Education’s substantive and to proceed to closure of Houghton Regis Academy. Greenwood Academy Trust, who run Houghton Regis Academy, have launched a listening period on the proposed closure process. All parents of pupils at the school should have received a letter from the Trust explaining the process and how to give feedback.

If the plan goes ahead as proposed, the current year 9 and year 10 pupils will need to choose a new school as soon as possible and no later than 1 September 2020.

Choosing a new school

Whilst you can choose any school for your child, we are aware that year groups and friendship groups may want to stay together. We can confirm that the following schools have capacity for all of year 9 and year 10:

  • Manshead CE Academy in Dunstable
  • Chalk Hills Academy in Luton

If you do not wish to take up a place at the schools above, then below is a list of schools within Central Bedfordshire that, as of 3 March 2020, have available places in year 10:

  • Cedars Upper School
  • Etonbury Academy
  • Sandy Secondary School
  • Stratton Upper School
  • Vandyke Upper School

The following schools, as of 3 March 2020, have available places in year 9:

  • Cedars Upper School
  • Etonbury Academy
  • Sandy Secondary School
  • Stratton Upper School

To help you decide which school to choose, we are inviting all year 9 and year 10 parents to an admissions open event, where you can talk to the following to help you make an informed decision about which school would be suitable for your child:

  • school admissions team
  • school transport team
  • school improvement team
  • Chalk Hills and Manshead schools

The admissions event will take place on Wednesday, 18 March 2020, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm at Houghton Regis Academy. There is no need to book, just come along.

SEND children

If your child has an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), parents still need to express a school preference and should contact the SEND team who will make the application on your behalf, you can contact them by telephoning 0300 300 8356.

Year 9 and year 10 pupils will be offered free school transport to their new school.

Those pupils unaffected by the change in age range at Houghton Regis will not be offered transport.

Application process

You will be asked to choose a first and second preference from the schools by 1 April 2020.

This will enable us to confirm the outcome of your application no later than 8 April 2020 and allow your child’s next school time to ensure a smooth transition.

If you do not wish to use the schools identified in this letter, you must let our school admissions team know (email admissions@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk). We will provide you with up-to-date information about other schools within the wider area that have available places. However, this may affect any school transport support that would be offered. Applications for alternative schools in the wider area will need to be received by 1 April 2020.
