Council Tax - what to do if someone dies

We are sorry if you have recently suffered a bereavement.

To reduce the number of different government and council departments that you have to contact, our registrations team offer a service called Tell Us Once (link opens in new window). If you register a death using this service, Tell Us Once will notify other departments (including Council Tax, HM Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions) so that you don’t need to contact them separately.

If you’re not able to use the Tell Us Once service, or don’t want to, please call us on 0300 300 8306 or email to tell us that someone has died. You’ll still need to register the death separately with our registrations team.
