Housing application checklist

Documents you need to get on the Housing Register

Once you've applied online, you'll be told (at the end) if you're likely to qualify for the Housing Register and, if you qualify, you will be given a list of the documents you need to provide.

Have you got all the documents we've asked for?

We need everything we've asked for, to process your application. If we don't have what we need, we won't be able to progress your application until we do.

View or download our example document checklist (PDF). This lists all the documents we need for every situation, but we hope it'll help remind you of what you need to give us.

Have you got electronic versions of your documents?

We can only accept documents via email, at the moment, as our offices are currently closed.

Top tip: You can scan, save and send documents with your phone or tablet.

There are lots of guides on the web to help.

Other things to think about when getting your documents together

Keep your personal information safe

The documents we need will contain your personal information.

When sending the files to us, you should:

  • encrypt all files, before you send (how this works depends on the software you're using)
  • send us files on one email and passwords on another
  • ensure passwords are different for each file (but you'll need to tell us which password is for which file)

Email isn't a secure system, so you should take these steps to protect your identity.

Read our data privacy notice, if you'd like to know how we process your information.

Have you checked that each document is complete?

All pages for each document are in one file and are appropriately named. For example: Current Bank Account (name) Jun-Aug20; payslips (name) Jul-Aug20.

Have you clearly stated your application number and date of birth?

This will help us to match your documents to your application form.

Have you provided documents for all applicants over 18?

We need the following information for all those included in your application who are over 18:

  • ID
  • proof of National Insurance Number
  • proof of address
  • proof of income (benefits or wages)
  • proof of full time education
  • bank statements from all bank accounts

Have you remembered to complete and sign the address history form and declaration?

You must complete and supply both forms to progress your application. We need to know where you have been staying for the last 5 years, even if you have not held your own tenancy.

Have you provided bank statements from all accounts you have?

All applicants over 18 must provide statements from all their bank accounts. This includes all current and savings accounts.

Have you provided a health needs questionnaire?

If your health is affected by your accommodation, complete a health needs questionnaire.

Seen a doctor or other health professional?

You need to send anything from them about the difficulties experienced in your home.

Have you provided landlord references or contact details?

We'll need to contact all landlords for any properties you have rented in the last 5 years. This includes your current landlord.
