About the BT payphone consultation: October 2020

BT is continually reviewing the demand for its payphones and has identified 29 public payphones as unnecessary in Central Bedfordshire.
To make sure that the local community are fully informed, BT has placed consultation notices on these payphones and asked us to carry out a public consultation.
You may remember we undertook a similar community consultation for BT at the start of the year, which sought the views of the local community and other public organisations such as town and parish councils, which received 86 responses for the final stage of the consultation.
The consultation responses indicated there was general support for retaining the payphones in villages – either as phone boxes or adopting them for community use. There were a handful of suggestions that the phone boxes could be used by the community as small lending libraries.
Some of objections were around the lack of mobile signal in the villages, and the need for payphones in the case of network outages. Some communities lodged concerns that removing the payphones will have more an impact on the elderly and disabled.
In this latest consultation, BT added the payphone on Vimy Road, in Leighton Buzzard to the list of those to be consulted on for removal or adoption.
Based on community feedback and evidence provided during the January 2020 consultation and recent feedback received from Leighton Linslade Town Council relating to the payphone on Vimy road, we proposed to object to all 29 payphones being removed.
We asked your thoughts on whether you agree or disagree with our decision in response to BT’s proposals.
