6 June 2015: Lord-Lieutenant presents Legion d'Honneur award to Ron Rogers (Deceased)
HM Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis, was delighted to present Major Ron Rogers, aged 97, from Harrold, Bedfordshire, with his award of the The Legion d’Honneur, given by the French Government to all surviving Normandy veterans on 6 June at an event held at Turvey House, Bedfordshire.
At about 8am on 6 June 1944, Ron landed on Sword Beach as a Captain and second-in-command of A Company, 1st Battalion the Suffolk Regiment. Over the next two months Ron was heavily involved in operations, one of which resulted in him being awarded “Mentioned in Despatches”, but on 13 August his Normandy campaign came to an end when he was wounded by a mortar bomb and he was evacuated to England. However, by January 1945 he was fit enough to rejoin the battalion and was promoted to Major before finishing the war in Bremen.
