What is the role of the High Sheriff?

The High Sheriff:

  • acts as the Returning Officer for parliamentary elections
  • maintains the loyalty of subjects to the Crown
  • is responsible for the proclamation of the accession of a new Sovereign
  • attendance at Royal visits
  • undertakes duties to support and encourage voluntary and statutory organisations engaged in all aspects of law and order
  • provides hospitality and look after the well-being of High Court Judges when they are visiting the county on circuit
  • works with organisations involved with young people, in particular through the Association's two Charities, National Crimebeat (link opens in new window) (and other similar initiatives) and DebtCred
  • makes awards to those who in the opinion of the Judges at a criminal trial have been active in the apprehension of certain offenders - in accordance with the Criminal Law Act 1826
