What is a hosepipe ban?
The official name for a hosepipe ban is a Temporary Use Ban.
During a Temporary Use Ban, you may not be allowed to use a hosepipe, sprinkler or pressure washer connected to the mains water supply for activities such as:
- watering gardens, lawns and plants
- washing private vehicles
- filling paddling pools, swimming pools or hot tubs
- cleaning patios, paths and driveways
- cleaning walls and windows
- filling ponds or ornamental fountains
- cleaning private leisure boats
The activities covered by a ban, and any exceptions, will be explained by your water supplier.
Why are hosepipe bans introduced?
Water companies may introduce temporary restrictions during prolonged dry weather or periods of exceptionally high demand.
Restrictions help to:
- protect public water supplies
- reduce pressure on rivers, reservoirs and groundwater
- make sure enough water remains available for homes, businesses and essential services
