We request that Central Bedfordshire Council install a controlled pedestrian crossing on Dunstable Street, between Oliver Street and Station Road, to improve safety for children and other pedestrians using this busy route.
The school crossing patrol is not currently operating, leaving large numbers of pupils travelling to The Firs, Alameda, and Russell Lower Schools without a safe crossing point. Traffic volumes and vehicle speeds make this section of road difficult and dangerous to cross, particularly at school start and finish times.
There have been several near-miss incidents involving children. The nearest controlled crossings are 250m to the south and 400m to the north, leaving a long stretch with no safe crossing.
Installing a controlled crossing at this location would reduce road-safety risks, encourage safer driving behaviour, and support safer routes to school.
We urge Central Bedfordshire Council to assess the location and install an appropriate controlled pedestrian crossing as a priority.
Supporting details
Due to the school crossing patrol not currently operating and assisting school children to and from school, it is a growing safety concern for parents and carers when attempting to cross this road.
