Overview

The Sharpenhoe group of properties comprises four adjacent countryside areas to the north of Luton.

Sundon Hills has a lovely picnic area; benches ore provided or bring a blanket and sit on the gross. Reputedly haunted, Sharpenhoe Clappers is a classic chalk escarpment and port of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is crowned with traces of on iron age hill-fort and on impressive beech wood. Seek out the old chalk quarry and savour the views along the ridge of hills. In summer, walk through the moss of flowers and butte lies in the quarry itself.

Admission free.

A 50-hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) comprising chalk grassland and beech woodland, both very important habitats. Also important for geological features known as coombes which formed under glacial conditions. This site has good links with the right of way network, including the Icknield Way and John Bunyan Trail. There are paths around the site that can be steep and muddy.

Getting there

The Country Park is reached from the road between Upper Sundon and Harlington which can be reached from the A6 north of Luton, or from the A5120 just north of Junction 12 of the M1. There is a car park on the road between Upper Sundon and Harlington.
