Traffic management and parking enforcement on Southwood Road between Morcom Road and Mountview Avenue

Full details of the e-petition

We request that the Council take action to improve traffic flow and safety on Southwood Road between Morcom Road and Mountview Avenue.

At present, vehicles — particularly buses — are frequently unable to pass the bus stop on the bend before Mountview Avenue due to cars parking too close to the junctions and along both sides of the road. This reduces the road to a single lane, severely restricts visibility for drivers exiting side roads, and regularly prevents buses from manoeuvring through the bend and bus stop safely.

As a result, buses are often forced to stop, and drivers have had to leave their vehicles to manually direct traffic. This situation creates congestion, delays to public transport, and safety risks for drivers, pedestrians, and residents.

Supporting details

We ask the Council to:

Review the layout of the bus stop and bend on Southwood Road, Enforce existing parking restrictions, particularly parking within 10 metres of junctions (as set out in the Highway Code), and

Consider introducing additional measures such as marked restrictions, double yellow lines, or physical changes to prevent unsafe and obstructive parking.

These measures would improve visibility, allow buses to pass safely, reduce congestion, and improve road safety for all road users.
