Improve safety on Ridgeway Avenue Dunstable – restrict school drop-off and pick-up hours
Full details of the e-petition
We, the undersigned residents of Ridgeway Avenue Dunstable, urgently call upon the council to address the growing safety concerns caused by school traffic during drop-off and pick-up hours on our street. The current situation poses significant risks to children, residents, and all road users.
Our concerns include:
- excessive congestion during school hours
- vehicles blocking driveways and sidewalks
- unsafe speeding and illegal U-turns
- reduced visibility for pedestrians and cyclists
- difficulty accessing or leaving our homes safely
We respectfully request the following actions:
Time-based traffic restrictions on Ridgeway Avenue Dunstable at The Vale Academy during school drop-off and pick-up hours 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm allowing access only for residents, school buses, and emergency vehicles.
Supporting details
Key issues include:
- some parents arriving up to 1–2 hours early and idling their cars, playing loud music, and creating unnecessary noise and disruption
- loud music and noise from parked vehicles
- engines left idling for extended periods, contributing to air pollution and unnecessary emissions
- groups of parents engaging in loud, prolonged conversations outside homes
- blocked driveways and sidewalks
- unsafe driving behaviors (e.g., double parking, sudden U-turns)
- reduced ability for residents to access or exit their homes safely
- general decline in peace and livability during school traffic hours
Our goal is not to inconvenience families but to restore balance and safety to our residential area. We believe it is entirely reasonable to expect respectful behavior from all community members, especially in a shared public space.
We urge CBC to take these concerns seriously and implement appropriate measures promptly.
