The junction of Ridgeway Avenue and Luton Road is increasingly unsafe, particularly during peak hours and school drop off and pick up times. Traffic on Luton Road is continuous and fast moving, often leaving drivers exiting Ridgeway Avenue waiting extended periods before attempting to join the main road. This regularly results in risky manoeuvres, near misses, and avoidable danger.
Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about this junction, and there have been multiple incidents and collisions in the surrounding area. The lack of traffic signals or effective traffic control forces drivers to take unsafe decisions simply to exit the junction, creating a clear and ongoing safety risk.
Luton Road carries a high volume of traffic, including HGVs, despite the existence of the Woodside Link Road which was intended to reduce through traffic. This further increases congestion and risk at this junction.
A “no right turn” restriction has been suggested as a potential solution, however this would not resolve the underlying safety issue and would also create additional nuisance for residents. Many residents rely on turning right to access the nearby retail park and to travel into inner Dunstable. Restricting this movement would divert traffic through residential roads, increase journey times, and shift the problem elsewhere rather than fixing it.
Traffic signals would provide a clearer, safer, and more permanent solution by properly managing vehicle movements, improving traffic flow, and reducing the likelihood of collisions without disadvantaging local residents.
We therefore request that Central Bedfordshire Council urgently reassess this junction on site during peak periods and prioritise the installation of traffic lights or other effective safety measures before a serious injury occurs.
