Woodside Link road news - 2016
13 December: Leighton Fun Runners enjoyed a 5k charity club run on the Woodside Link on Sunday, December 11. The fastest time was 16:22. Participants made donations to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. View the full report on The Vine (link opens in new window), including a short video.
22 November: If you like the outdoors and fancy serving as a Woodside Link Community Orchard volunteer, visit our stall at the Santa’s Grotto event at Houghton Regis Library (Saturday 10 December, 9am to 12 noon) to find out more.
21 November: The works currently taking place at the Porz Ave end of the scheme are to place and compact what is known as type 1 sub-base, which is the foundation of the road. These works are envisaged to last a further week.
4 November: The Woodside Link Cycling Celebration event takes place on the Woodside Link road on Saturday 10 December, 10am to 2pm. The free family event is set to include:
- 10am to noon - cycle racing for youngsters aged 16 and under organised by Icknield Road Club (time trials - just turn up with your bike to take part)
- noon to 2pm - all ages invited to cycle up and down the road
- extreme Mountain Bike Show
- live music from local band The Situators
- bicycle advice from Dr Bike
- local cycling information from Luton and Dunstable Cycling Forum
- fire engine from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue
- food van
- Central Bedfordshire Council exhibition marquee
The celebration takes place on the road itself - with free entry from the footway that leads from Frogmore Road to Wheatfield Surgery.
31 October: The Porz Ave roundabout re-opened as planned on Sunday, 30 October.
27 October: The Porz Ave roundabout works are progressing well and will be completed on Sunday 30 October.
18 October: During the Porz Ave roundabout closure (22-30 Oct) there will be a signed footpath diversion next to the roundabout to get to Wheatfield Road. You can then cross on Poynters Road to get to Porz Ave.

7 October: Porz Ave roundabout is fully closed 22-30 October (24 hours). The roundabout is being modified so that vehicles can use it to access the Woodside Link. Details of the diversion can be found on roadworks.org (link opens in new window).
3 October: A length of footway on Parkside Drive will be closed from today until Wednesday afternoon. This is to complete work on a surface water sewer. A temporary pedestrian route through the works will be enclosed with sturdy fencing to eliminate any risk to members of the public.
27 September: The A5-M1 Link scheme’s second newsletter is available online - with a construction update and plans for the next phase of work. Visit Highways England for more information (link opens in new window).
22 September: There is an M1 motorway closure this weekend from 8pm Saturday to 2pm Sunday to demolish the old Houghton Bridge over the M1. The northbound closure is between junctions 9 and 14, the southbound closure is between junctions 11 and 12.
20 September: The road layout at the Porz Ave roundabout will change later this week. Traffic heading from the Porz Ave roundabout to Wheatfield Road will be using the new junction on the Woodside Link. Traffic heading in the opposite direction will continue using the full length of Wheatfield Road for a few more weeks. All traffic heading to or from Wheatfield Road should be using the junction with the Woodside Link by mid-October - at which point the end of Wheatfield Road will be closed off to create a cul-de-sac.
Please note: Porz Ave roundabout will be closed from 21 October to 30 October to complete the work. Signed diversions will be in place. We apologise for this inconvenience.
15 September: You will be using the new B579 Luton Road bridge over the M1 from 8pm on Friday 16 September. Please also note there is a weekend road closure on Luton Road near Vauxhall from 8pm Friday to 6am Monday. Signed diversions will be in place. You will be using a new section of road when Luton Road re-opens on Monday.
12 September: Help create a beautiful environment next to the Woodside Link. Come along to the Sandringham Hub (48 Sandringham Drive, Houghton Regis, LU5 5UP) at 2pm on Saturday 24 September to find out how to become a community orchard volunteer.
6 September: The M1 will be closed this weekend in both directions between junctions 11 and 12 for the demolition of the old B579 Luton Road bridge (northbound closure between junctions 9 - 13, southbound closure between junctions 11 - 12). The motorway will be closed from 8pm on Saturday 10 September to Sunday 11 September at 2pm. Highways England's teams will demolish the bridge, clear the debris and prepare the M1 for re-opening. Signed diversions will be in place, but drivers are advised to consider alternative routes if possible. This work is part of Highways England's A5-M1 Link scheme. A further closure will follow from 8pm on Saturday 24 September to 2pm on Sunday 25 September for the demolition of the old Houghton Road bridge. A new bridge will be open to take traffic over the M1 before the second demolition takes place.
31 August: BBC Three Counties Radio has posted a short video on You Tube, giving an update on Highways England's A5-M1 Link scheme. This new road will connect to the Woodside Link at M1 motorway junction 11a.
30 August: It won't be long before road users are accessing Wheatfield Road from the new junction with the Woodside Link. Northbound traffic heading on to Wheatfield Road should be using the Woodside Link from the middle of September - with southbound traffic still using Wheatfield Road to access the Porz Avenue roundabout. All traffic should be using the Woodside Link to access Wheatfield Road by the end of September - at which point Wheatfield Road will be closed off to create a cul-de-sac. This schedule is based on work to move underground cables being finished.
25 August: Following a change to the schedule for M1 closures, the southbound carriageway will be closed tonight between junctions 11 and 12 from 10pm to 6am.
18 August: There will be two road closures this weekend.
- west of the M1
Sundon Road will be closed from 8am Saturday 20 August 2016 to 6pm Sunday 21 August 2016 from the junction with the Luton Road roundabout to the junction with Hillborough Crescent, Houghton Regis. When the road reopens on Sunday, traffic will head over the newly constructed bridge over the A5-M1 Link road, before rejoining the current road layout
- east of the M1
the road between Luton Road and Sundon Road near the railway bridge will be closed from 8pm Friday 19 August 2016 to 6am Monday 22 August 2016 to allow construction of the new roundabout. Two-way traffic lights are in place within the same section of road from 10am Wednesday 17 August 2016 to 8pm Friday 19 August 2016 to allow for preparation work to be undertaken prior to the closure

3 August: There is a new road layout on Sundon Road - with vehicles now using the new roundabout at the top of the Woodside Link road scheme. Traffic signals will control the flow of traffic around this roundabout from 9:30am to 3:30pm. This temporary layout will be in place until the end of next week.
1 August: M1 carriageway and lane closures between junction 11 and junction 12 from 10pm to 6am for A5-M1 Link scheme bridge work.
- Mon 8 Aug – southbound full closure, northbound lane closures
- Tues 9 Aug – southbound full closure, northbound lane closures
- Wed 10 Aug – northbound full closure, southbound lane closures
- Mon 22 Aug - southbound full closure, northbound lane closures

- Wed 24 Aug - northbound full closure, southbound lane closures

22 July: A section of Thorn Road will be closed from 6am Monday 25 July 2016 to 6am Monday 1 August 2016, and a section of the A5 between Hockliffe Road and the A505 roundabout will be closed from 10pm Friday 29 July 2016 to 6am Monday 1 August 2016. 17 June: There are two road closures this weekend. A short section of Luton Road, Chalton, will be closed from the new mini-roundabout on Sundon Road from 8pm Friday to 6am Saturday. The A5120 is closed between Thorn Road and Tebworth Road, 6am Saturday to 6am Monday, for surfacing works to the A5-M1 Link roundabout.
13 June: A photo album (link opens in new window) has been added to Facebook to show progress at the southern end of the scheme.
7 June: A short section of Luton Road Chalton will be closed from the new mini-roundabout on Sundon Road, from 8pm Friday 10 June to 6am Monday 13 June. Visit roadworks.org (link opens in new window) for a map of the closure. This is for utility works and drainage works.
3 June: The A5120 will be closed between Thorn Road and Tebworth Road from 8pm this evening (Friday 3 June) to 6am Monday (6 June) to switch traffic over to the new roundabout layout, where the A5120 meets the A5-M1 Link road. A signed diversion will be in place during this time. This work is part of the A5-M1 Link scheme.
27 May: A section of Luton Road, east of the M1, will be closed between 10pm and 6am from Tuesday 31 May for three nights. This closure will allow a utility company to carry out essential work as part of Highways England's A5-M1 Link scheme. The road will be closed from the Coverdale roundabout, to the junction with the new section of road that links to Sundon Road.
11 May: Please note that A5120 closures planned for this weekend (13-16 May) and next weekend (20-23 May) have been postponed.
4 May: Over the next month the teams on site will be preparing and surfacing the tie-in from the Woodside Link to the Porz Ave roundabout, starting to surface the rest of the Woodside Link, filling redundant sections of the brook, installing kerbs, and filling beneath Parkside Bridge.
29 April: There will no longer be peak time lane closures on Porz Avenue from 30 April, to ease local congestion during the works.
22 April: Work is continuing on Porz Ave and the roundabout. There will be a permanent lane closure on the dual carriageway section while this takes place. In all other areas of the works there be off-peak lane closures, 9.30am to 3.30pm. These works are likely to be in place until mid-June.

8 April: A section of Houghton Brook has now been diverted.
16 March - update on new Luton Road bridge over M1: Bridge beam lifts begin this evening - which means there will be a series of carriageway closures 10pm to 6am between junctions 11 and 12. See M1 Carriageway Closures Spring 2016 (PDF 174.6KB) for details of closures.
M1 southbound traffic will exit at junction 12 and turn right along the A5120. At the roundabout in Houghton Regis, traffic will turn right towards Dunstable when reaching the crossroad junction adjacent to the National Tyres and Auto Care Centre. Diverted traffic will turn left and head south to the A505. At the traffic lights with the A505, diverted traffic will turn left and rejoin the motorway at junction 11.
M1 northbound traffic will exit at junction 11 and turn left along the A505. At the junction with the A5, diverted traffic will turn right and at the traffic lights adjacent to the National Tyres and Auto Care Centre. Diverted traffic will turn right towards Houghton Regis. At the roundabout in Houghton Regis, traffic will turn left to Toddington to rejoin the motorway at junction 12.
3 March 2016: Transport Minister Andrew Jones MP visited Highways England's A5-M1 Link scheme this morning. Central Bedfordshire Councillor Nigel Young toured the site with him, before giving local media a tour of the Woodside Link site. 2 March 2016: In the next few days, vegetation is to be removed from the east side of Parkside Drive, from the existing road to the fence next to the adjacent houses. This is so that the thinner section of the road can be widened.
25 February 2016:a short YouTube video (link opens in new window) shows the construction of the new bridge taking Sundon Road over the A5-M1 Link.
16 February 2016: A section of Luton Road near Vauxhall will be closed on Thursday evening (18 February) from 8pm to 6am to lay a cable across the road. The closed section is in green in this map - the signed diversion is in purple (PDF 2.8MB) .

25 January: Off-peak lane closures on the Porz Avenue roundabout and Sandringham Drive will be in place over the next six months as work at the southern end of the scheme progresses (off peak is 9.15am to 4pm Monday to Thursday, 9.15am to 3.30pm Friday). Two-way traffic flows will be maintained at all times. Traffic lights will be used very occasionally; they will be installed either overnight or at weekends. Dates of temporary road closures for surfacing will be announced nearer the time.

8 January 2016: Work is progressing well on site despite the prolonged spell of incredibly wet weather. The demolition of a number of farm buildings at Chalton Cross Farm is nearing completion. Over the next few weeks 'road boxes’ (large trenches marking out the route) will be cut along the northern end of the Woodside Link prior to several stages of surfacing in March. Drainage will also be completed. The area around and under Parkside Bridge will be filled in with earth ready for the diversion of Houghton Brook. Fill material will be placed on the new road approach to Porz Avenue roundabout, as the initial stage of works at the southern tie-in of the scheme.
4 January 2016: Work on the Woodside Link site starts again today following the Christmas and New Year break.
