Parking permits - residential, visitors and market traders

Visitors' parking permits

Residents' parking zones are designed to help ensure street parking is available for residents. If you have visitors, they may need a permit to park near your home.

Drivers may be issued with a penalty charge notice if they fail to clearly display a valid permit or park somewhere other than in a permit bay in the zone.

As a resident, you need to apply for a permit for your visitors. You can only apply for one if you live in a residents' zone.

Your visitor permit will only cover the zone you live in. A permit will let your visitors park where they see residents' parking signs. If there are no free parking spaces, it does not allow them to park on a double or single yellow line, nor in an off-street car park.

A book of 25 visitor permits costs £32.50. You will be allowed a maximum of 3 books per year.

You can also apply for virtual visitor parking sessions, via Permit Smarti. These cost £13 for ten 24-hour parking sessions.

You may be prosecuted if:

  • you give false information
  • you alter, forge or copy a permit
  • you use a permit you are not entitled to
  • you let someone else use a permit they are not entitled to

When your visitor permit expires any remaining sessions on expired visitor permits do not currently get carried over to the renewed permit. Please contact the parking team on 0300 300 8005 and they can send you out the remaining hard copy visitor permits.
