Diversions and closures
We try to limit any road closures to during the least busy times. And, if our contractors finish quickly, then we'll re-open the roads early to minimise any inconvenience to you.
The wider A421 dual carriageway will need two bridges to be extended: the Cranfield Road bridge, plus another footbridge near Hulcote that will safely take pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists over the wider A421 and the M1 (via four public rights of way).
We will need to close the road for the safety of our workers and the public whilst we prepare for these bridges to be extended.
Cranfield Road bridge will be closed from 8pm on Friday 25 January, to 6am on Monday 28 January 2019. This will allow us to finish foundations, ready for construction of a temporary bridge to carry utility company pipes and cables, which is being installed in February.
From 8pm on Friday 15 February 2019 until 6am on Monday 18 February, both the A421 (from Eagle Farm roundabout to Junction 13 of the M1) and Cranfield Road will be closed. This will allow us to lift and put in place three sections of the temporary bridge which will carry the BT, Anglian Water and Western Power services over the exiting A421 and M1, whilst we demolish the Cranfield Road bridge. We will have a crane lifting each section into place.
Cranfield Road Bridge Closure
To do the bridge extension, we’ll need to close the Cranfield Road from May 2019 for up to 12 months whilst the road improvements are done. We are working with our contractor to reduce this period, if possible.
We will only make closures when the M1 road is open. However, our diversions show the alternative routes for drivers who can’t or who don’t want to use the motorway.
There is a diversion route for drivers who would normally take the A421. This route avoids villages and goes via the A421 Bedford Western Bypass and then the A422 towards Milton Keynes.
There is also a diversion route for those who would normally take the Cranfield Road.
The lorry restrictions remain in place for the local villages.
Temporary closures to public rights of way will be in effect during the work.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank you for your patience during the roadworks.
