Council in partner talks with FA over Biggleswade football centre
Central Bedfordshire Council has begun talks with Bedfordshire Football Association to develop a football facilities in Biggleswade, which will serve the growing needs of grass-roots football in the east of the county.
The Kings Reach development is required to provide three grass football pitch sites and Bedfordshire FA is proposing to manage these as a community football facility, but also bring in external funding to deliver a 3G artificial grass pitch (adjacent to St Andrews CofE Lower School), a changing facility and on-site parking.
Cllr Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Community Services, said: "This represents a wonderful opportunity to work in partnership with Bedfordshire FA, which is a not for profit organisation with a track record of successfully delivering and managing similar high-quality facilities for the use of local communities.
"Also key to their proposal is the addition of a much-need artificial pitch which aligns with our Leisure Strategy priorities, and their focus on grass-roots football seeks to address the growing demand for junior football in Biggleswade and the surrounding areas."
Bedfordshire FA Chief Executive Dan Robathan said: "We are in the early stages of our discussions with Central Bedfordshire Council about how we can deliver the project. We plan to carry out a full consultation exercise with the local community and relevant stakeholders in due course, prior to any finalised decision being made.
"Bedfordshire FA, like the Football Association, is a non-profit making organisation where any surplus we make is invested back into the game to develop local football within Bedfordshire.
"Should this facility come forward, we would focus on junior and youth football, allowing access for St Andrew's School and all clubs and teams from Biggleswade and the surrounding areas, using, as a blueprint, our very successful facility at Skimpot Road in Dunstable, where we have a wide range of teams and local community groups accessing our facilities."
