New lifeline for smokers in Central Bedfordshire

“Thank you for helping my mummy.”

That’s just one of many grateful messages sent to the Stop Smoking Service at Central Bedfordshire Council, who are urging smokers to quit not just for themselves but also their loved ones this New Year.

And there’s now an even easier way to get help, through the new Facebook page that Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough Councils have created specially to support people who are hoping to stop smoking.

A team of dedicated Stop Smoking Advisors will run the new page, offering advice and support.

Already anyone can sign up to quit with the council’s free Stop Smoking Service and you’re four times more likely to be successful if you do.

The service has been praised as one of the best in the region, with over 65% of people who use the service managing to quit.

This is the 2nd best quit rate in the eastern region and 11th best nationally, and quitters are glowing in their praise with letters describing the service as “wonderful”, giving them “the confidence to quit”, and as providing “brilliant support.”

Once you register with the service you’ll be sent a free ‘quit kit’ which contains a host of support materials including a money saving calculator, a motivational calendar to help you through your first 4 weeks and even a distraction toy called a ‘tangle’ to keep your hands busy and take your mind off cigarettes.

The team will develop a tailored support plan for you and you’ll have one to one sessions with a specialist advisor as well as lots of support all along the way.

Celia Shohet, Assistant Director of Public Health at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “The call to smokers is to ‘Quit For Them,’ but also to ‘Quit With Us.’ We’re fortunate enough to have a very effective Stop Smoking Service in Central Bedfordshire and one with a high success rate.

“The new Quit For Them Facebook page will make it even easier to get help from our team of dedicated and highly-praised Stop Smoking Advisors.

“Stopping smoking can be a very daunting prospect but you don’t have to go it alone.”
