Nursery school mergers approved

Central Bedfordshire Council’s Executive has approved plans to merge two nursery schools with nearby academies.

Tuesday’s (1 December) decision means that Arlesey Nursery School will be merged with Gothic Mede Academy and the Lawns Nursery School with Biggleswade Academy.

Both academies have already been supporting the respective nursery schools and the decision guarantees their future.

The decision was only taken following extensive consultation, including meetings with parents, carers and residents of the two towns.

Gothic Mede has been supporting Arlesey Nursery School since 2013 and the merger will lead to increased childcare provision in Arlesey, while Biggleswade Academy has had a similar arrangement with the Lawns for the past year.

Councillor Mark Versallion, Executive Member for Education and Skills, said: “More schools are looking to have an influence earlier on children’s learning journey across Central Bedfordshire. I welcome this decision which formalises the very close working relationships which exist between these nursery schools and their partner academy schools.”

The two nursery schools will now formally close – although there is no reason for parents and carers to be concerned as the officially expanded academies will reopen the following day.
