Home Adaptations and Aids for residents with disabilities
Residents of Central Bedfordshire with disabilities may be able to apply for assistance to help modify homes to make them safer, more useable and to enable independent living.
Funding for private residents and those housed with Aragon Homes could be available through the provision of a Disabled Facilities Grant, or if relatively minor in cost, through the provision of direct funding provided by the Council.
All enquiries for Disabled Facilities Grants process must firstly go to the Council’s Occupational Therapy team, telephone 0300 300 8050.
All adaptations or aids to be funded are subject to an assessment by an Occupational Therapist, who will assess the needs of the person and most appropriate type of adaptation or aid to help meet those needs.]
Funding is also subject to a financial test of resources in most cases. The Occupational Therapist will be able to provide some advice, or you can contact the Council’s Private Sector Housing Team on 0300 300 8007 or 0300 300 5164/5142, who administer the grants and undertake the test of resources (which is a Government prescribed test).
However, those in social housing in the south of the district, Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Toddington, Houghton Regis, Barton-le-Clay, Caddington, Slip End etc may currently be able to apply under the Aids and Adaptations scheme.
Applicants need to have a long term disability and be socially housed. If the applicant needs equipment assistance (grab rails, bathing or sanitary equipment, trolleys and some forms as access assistance), then they need to call One Call on 0845 602064.
However, if the need is for a more major adaptation (Level access showers, stair lifts) then the applicant (or carer) should call 0300 300 8050.
Callers will be asked details of the applicant’s situation including the disability, any problems the applicant is encountering, how long this problem has occurred for as well as the level of support they are currently receiving.
