Special waste collections we provide
Assisted bin collections
Central Bedfordshire Council will make the provision for those residents who are unable to move the waste and recycling containers to the normal collection point (highway boundary) themselves and do not have anyone living at the address who is available to assist.
Residents could qualify for reasons such as age or infirmity. Where residents qualify, this service is free of charge.

Clinical waste
Central Bedfordshire Council can arrange to collect clinical waste from households that need it. This is a separate collection and will need to be arranged on an individual basis dependant on the needs of the resident. This service is free of charge.
What is clinical waste?
Clinical waste is any waste which consists wholly or partly of;
- Human tissue
- Blood
- Other body fluid
- Drugs
- Other pharmaceutical products
- Swabs or dressings
- Syringes, needles or other sharp instruments
If you or someone in your household needs a clinical waste collection that is not dealt with by your healthcare visitor/ carer, please contact us and we will make arrangements for a member of the waste team to provide advice.
Bulky waste
Our bulky collection service allows for the removal of up to 12 items only. There is a charge for this service and collections are made by arrangement only.
Fees
From 1 April 2012, new fees will apply:
Standard - £49
Concessionary fee - £24.50
* Fridge freezers are not permitted as part of a bulky collection. For information about fridge/freezer collection, see our information page.
The following items cannot be collected using the special collection Service
- Garden refuse including garden sheds, fencing or greenhouses;
- Household items including cardboard, garage doors, pianos (or similar very heavy objects);
- Large items including glass/mirrors and old windows;
- Builders' waste including radiators, boilers, gas/oil heaters or fires;
- Domestic waste including general bags/ boxes of waste, paint or paint tins;
- Car parts including tyres, batteries and gas bottles
- DIY waste including bricks, broken concrete, soil/ stones and loose rubble;
- Asbestos and chemicals (eg. weedkiller or oil)
Removal of fridges and freezers
This service allows for the removal of 1 item only (a combined fridge/freezer is accepted as 1 item) charged at £38.30. More than one item will cost £38.30 (inc VAT) for each additional item. Please ensure any fridge or freezer is empty before collection.
If you are in receipt of housing benefit, pension tax credit, council tax benefit or income support, the standard fee is £19.15 (a 50% reduction of the normal fee).
Abandoned car / vehicle (including unwanted and end of live vehicles)
The Council has a duty under Section 3 of the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978, to remove a vehicle which is abandoned within Central Bedfordshire. The Council is also able to issue fixed penalty notices to the registered keeper of any vehicle found to be abandoned under Part 2 Section 10 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
Central Bedfordshire Council is able to:- Remove, and dispose of abandoned vehicles with little or no value within 1 working day of report.
- Remove, store and dispose of abandoned vehicles with some value within 7 days of report.
- Recover any and all costs relating to the removal, storage or disposal from the person responsible for abandoning the vehicle.
- Remove vehicles on private land (subject to statutory notice period and in some cases the landowners permission).
- Trace vehicle ownership and impose fines on those abandoning vehicles.
- Does the vehicle have a tax disc?
- Has the tax disc past its expiry date?
- Does the vehicle have flat tyres or missing wheels?
- Is there any litter in or under the vehicle, which might indicate it has not moved for some time?
- Is the windscreen or are any of the windows broken?
- Does the vehicle have number plates?
- Has the vehicle been vandalised?
If you are the registered keeper for a vehicle which has been abandoned you could be liable for the following costs:
- A fixed penalty charge of £200
- Storage costs levied by the storage facility where the vehicle is in their care.
- Removal costs for the vehicle where a vehicle is removed and taken to our storage facility.

- Make
- Model
- Colour
- Registration plate
- Location
- Condition of the vehicle.

Unwanted / End of life vehiclesCentral Bedfordshire currently operates a removal service for end of life vehicles.
This is a free service from domestic properties (the cost is £27.50 for non-domestic properties).
The registered keeper will be provided with a Certificate of Destruction when this has been completed.
To be eligible to surrender your car under this scheme you should have the V5 document and access to the car to be removed, you will also need to complete an authorisation form.
End of life Caravans
Central Bedfordshire Council can arrange the removal of unwanted end of life caravans.

We will require approximately 7 days from the date the form is received to process it.
It is not possible for the collectors to enter the property, therefore the items must be placed outside and at ground floor level and be available by 7am on the day of the agreed collection.
If you are in receipt of Housing benefit, Pension tax credit, Council tax benefit or Income support, the standard fee is £24.50 (a 50% reduction of the normal fee).
