The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR) came into force on 1 January 2005.  They updated the previous (1992) regulations and brought the UK into line with international requirements.

EIR gives certain rights of access to environmental information to the general public.

With some exceptions all environmental information held by the Council, both paper and electronic documents (including email), is considered to be publicly available.  All information, unless subject to an exception, will be released if requested.

• What information is required to make a request?
• Name
• Address (can be email address, fax number or home address)
• The request must be clear and concise

• Check the website the information may already be available
• Check the council publication scheme
• Check the disclosure log to see previous requests
• Remember certain documents will not be made available until they have been finalised
• Central Bedfordshire Council is not obliged to create information to comply with the Act this includes generating statistics
• Whilst information maybe requested in either paper or electronic format, there is no obligation to provide it in any other format then it is held.
• Check that the information is something that would potentially be held by the Council.
• Personal and Sensitive Personal data access requests should be made under Data Protection
• Non-environmental information should be requested under the Freedom of Information process
• If you submit more then one request for information at the same time they may be merged into a single request
