A to Z:

Archaeology

Central Bedfordshire has a rich and varied archaeological heritage, ranging from prehistoric burial mounds, Roman towns and rural settlements to medieval castles and villages, as well as the remains of more recent industries. This history isn’t just valuable for its own sake – it’s an important part of what defines our county, its character and its place within the rich history of England as a whole. Not to mention its brilliant educational and recreational worth – for both locals and visitors!

In order to safeguard, manage and promote our historic sites and monuments, Central Bedfordshire Council has an Archaeology Team based in the Conservation and Design Department. The Team advises on the archaeological impact of development proposals and provides briefs for archaeological investigations, as well as initiating research projects and applying for the funding necessary to run them. This includes looking at opportunities to get the wider community involved where possible.
