Parents urged to save money using Real Nappies

23 April 2009

Central Bedfordshire Council’s recycling team is encouraging mothers and fathers across the area to ditch disposable nappies and choose more environmentally friendly and cost effective real nappies in support of the 13th annual Real Nappy week, starting on 27 April.

This year's campaign is concentrating on how parents can save money by using Real Nappies. New mums and dads could save up to £500 on the first baby by using washable nappies from birth to potty training, they can then reuse cotton nappies on a second baby and save even more money.

Steve Whittaker, Assistant Director for Waste, said: “Starting a family is an expensive time for parents so by using real nappies can not only help keep the costs down, but also has great environmental benefits.  Babies will go through up to 5,000 nappy changes by the time they are potty trained. If a baby was wearing disposables that would equate to approximately one tonne of nappies thrown away into landfill every year - the equivalent of two baby elephants. Parents choosing to use real nappies on their children will reduce their household waste by up to 50%. "

Central Bedfordshire’s recycling team will be hosting a number of events across the area during the week, to show mums and dads the alternatives to disposable nappies.  The weeks events start on 27 April  and run to Saturday 2 May. Real Nappy advisors and mums who have used real nappies will be on hand to answer any questions, give nappy demonstrations and there’s even the opportunity to practise putting a real nappy on a demonstration doll.

For more information on questions about washable nappies and the cashback scheme please contact Central Bedfordshire Council on 0300 300 8000 or visit the environment pages of www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk

Today's real nappies are extremely soft, very well designed with buttons, poppers or Velcro instead of safety pins and they can be washed in your machine at 40 degrees,  to  find out more about the benefits of using real nappies then attend these free events next week.
