A to Z:

Council tax - overpayments

If you are paid more Council Tax Benefit than you are entitled to, this is called Excess Council Tax Benefit. This may happen if you do not tell us about a change of circumstances, such as an increase in income or other benefits, or a change in your household.

How are Council Tax Benefit overpayments recovered?

Any excess benefit is usually taken back from your council tax account, and you will receive a new bill with adjusted instalments to include the overpaid amount.

 Pay online here

This offers 24 hour secure online payments for Central Bedfordshire Council services.

There are also lots of other ways you can pay your bill - see our methods of payment page for more details.

What if I disagree with my overpayment?

If you disagree with your overpayment, or our decision to recover it from you, you can appeal against it. Visit our appeals page for more information about this.
