Deciding on an education setting for your child with SEND

Specialist SEND provision in mainstream schools

There are some mainstream schools in Central Bedfordshire which have specialist provisions for children with special educational needs and disability. The below schools cater specifically for those with:

  • autistic spectrum disorder (ASC)
  • social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH)
  • hearing impairments
  • language impairments

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASC)

Autism is a ‘spectrum condition’, meaning that it can differ a lot from person to person. Not all people with autism face the same challenges and they will be highly individual in their needs.

This variation is sometimes referred to being ‘high functioning’ or ‘low functioning’, which is a simple way of saying that some people with autism are able to function at a ‘high’ level, living relatively independent lives, whereas others have a ‘low’ level of day-to-day function, and need a great deal of support in many areas of their lives.
