Licence - alcohol and entertainment - premises

The Police Licencing Officer previously at Shefford Police Post has now moved to Biggleswade Police Station.  The address is Biggleswade Police Station, Station Road, Biggleswade, SG18 8AL.

The Licensing Act 2003 came into force on 24 November 2005.  The principle behind the act is to uphold the four licensing objectives which are:

  • the prevention of crime and disorder
  • public safety
  • the prevention of public nuisance
  • the protection of children from harm

Licensable activities may only be carried out, under, and in accordance with, a premises licence, temporary event notice or club premises certificate.

The Licensable activities are

  • Supply of alcohol,
  • Provision of regulated entertainment
  • Provision of late night refreshment.

Regulated entertainment is entertainment provided in the presence of an audience, for the purpose of entertaining that audience.

For example:

  • The performance of a plays
  • The exhibition of a film
  • An indoor sporting event
  • Boxing or wrestling
  • A performance of live music
  • Any playing of recorded music
  • A performance of dance
  • Entertainment of a similar description (such as a circus)

 It also includes the provision of entertainment facilities, that is facilities used for:

  • Making music (for example a karaoke machine)
  • Dancing (for example a dance floor)
  • Entertainment of a similar description
