A to Z:

Home improvements

As a tenant of Central Bedfordshire Council before you start any alterations to your home: new kitchens or bathrooms, extensions etc, you must get written permission from Central Bedfordshire Council. Initially you must apply, giving details of the planned works in writing to the Asset Management team. An officer will discuss your plans with you to ensure that no further damage will be incurred to your home, making it unsafe.

Consent for works will not be unreasonably withheld; however you will become responsible for maintaining any work that you carry out yourself.

Right to compensation for improvements

If you make any alterations to your home you may be entitled to compensation under a government initiative called the Right to Compensation, should you decide to move out. Further details including qualifying improvements, can be found by either clicking on the following link A better deal for tenants or by calling 0300 300 800.
