What is Council Tax?

You pay a lot of hard-earned money every year in council tax, so we’re committed to keeping you bang up-to-date on how we’re spending it. And that’s why we’ve created this area of the Central Bedfordshire website. So whether it’s a question about your bill or how your money is making a difference in the local community, you’ve come to the right place!

You’ll find a selection of useful links on this page, or consult your *council tax leaflet (application/pdf; 621kB) for tons of information on billing, calculation and allocation of funds, and the help available to those who need it.

In a nutshell, it’s a local tax set by every council in Britain, to help pay for the different needs and services of each local area. The amount you pay depends on which ‘band’ your property falls into – and that’s based on its value, whether it’s bought or rented.

Every March, we’ll send you a full year’s council tax bill, which runs from 1st April until 31st March the following year. This will tell you how much you need to pay, normally broken down into ten, manageable monthly instalments (which means you get a little ‘break’ from paying in February and March – very handy after the Christmas pinch!)

Some residents are eligible for a discount or exemption from their Council Tax charge. For example, if you’re the only adult living in your property, you can benefit from a ‘single occupancy’ discount, while if you are on a low income, you may be eligible for some form of council tax benefit.
