A to Z:

Biggleswade Town Centre Masterplan

Central Bedfordshire Council, as part of its efforts to improve our area for residents, visitors and businesses, is currently engaged in developing a Town Centre Strategy and Masterplan SPD for Biggleswade town centre.

The Strategy and Masterplan will identify, promote and guide new retail and housing led development opportunities in Biggleswade Town Centre ensuring that change and improvements are co-ordinated, including the delivery of infrastructure, public realm enhancements and new community facilities. It will have the status of a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) within the Mid Beds Local Development Framework.

One of the main drivers for this work is the considerable growth in the population of Biggleswade that is expected to take place over the next several years. With developments taking place in the east of Biggleswade and potentially in the town centre itself, the population of the town will grow by a minimum of 40% with 6,500 new residents. With this growth will come increasing pressure on the ability of Biggleswade to support the significantly greater demands placed on its infrastructure, retail and service sectors.

The Council wishes to develop a Strategy and Masterplan that will facilitate a renaissance and help the town in responding to change by adapting in appropriate ways to better serve the needs of its present and growing population. The Strategy and Masterplan are intended to provide clear direction for private and public sector investment against a series of priorities for action.

Over the coming months Central Bedfordshire Council will be seeking the views of residents, businesses and other users of the town centre on how they would like to see the town centre improve. As we progress, more information will be made available on this project on this page including details of consultation events and workshops.
