A to Z:

School - home education

Children of compulsory school age must, by law, be in receipt of a suitable education. Most parents choose to send their children to school in order that they may receive this education. Some parents however, choose to exercise their right to educate their children "otherwise than at school" - that is, they choose to educate them at home. The local authority is required to satisfy itself that children being home educated receive a suitable education. In order to help it do this the authority aims to work in partnership with home educating parents.

The local authority will offer support to home educating parents by:

  • making available general advice on the curriculum and teaching strategies, information on resources such as web sites and the library service, as well as information about support groups;
  • offering particular advice on issues concerning special educational needs e.g. Parent Partnership contacts, information on requesting an assessment of need, careers and counselling contacts;
  • offering additional advice for contacting other groups or bodies about particular activities/learning sessions e.g. Summer College and Out of School programmes;
  • providing reports to support college entry applications; and
  • offering personal or telephone contact to discuss specific home education issues.
